Reiner
Braun

Reiner grew up in the Liberio internment zone wanting one thing: to become an Honorary Marleyan so his mother could stop pretending their life was fine. His father was a Marleyan who slammed the door on him when Reiner finally found him. He clawed his way into the Warrior program on loyalty rather than talent, and he received the Armored Titan only because Marcel Galliard had quietly torn down his own brother Porco's candidacy to keep him out of the war. Marcel confessed all of it on the road to the walls, minutes before a Titan ate him while pushing Reiner clear.

A twelve-year-old with a dead squadmate and no way home made the worst call available: finish the mission anyway. Annie wanted to turn back, and Reiner beat the option out of the conversation, declaring that Reiner was dead and he would be Marcel now. Bertholdt kicked down Wall Maria, Reiner smashed the inner gate, and thousands of people, including Eren's mother, died so three children would not have to report failure. Five years undercover in the 104th split him in half, a soldier persona that believed its own kindness and a Warrior who ordered Marco's death and then could not remember why Marco was being eaten.

He told Eren the truth on top of Wall Rose almost casually, mid-breakdown, and the kidnapping that followed cost the Scouts their commander's arm and most of a generation of veterans. At Shiganshina the Thunder Spears blew his nape open twice and he lived only by moving his mind into his Titan's body. He went home a failure to a Marley that was already looking for his replacement, and one night he put a rifle in his mouth. The sound of Falco training outside made him take it back out. The candidates became the reason he kept going.

When Eren appeared under Liberio, Reiner knelt and asked to be killed. Eren refused and told him they were the same, which was its own punishment. Reiner spent the rest of the war absorbing damage for other people, shielding Falco and Gabi, holding the alliance's line at the port, wrestling the Colossal replica and the centipede at the final battle. He helped kill the boy whose mother his mission fed to a Titan, and three years later he sailed back to Paradis as a peace ambassador, still carrying all of it.
