Background
Conny joined up to make his village proud, a small loud kid from Ragako who ranked eighth in the 104th and followed Eren into the Scouts. When Titans appeared inside Wall Rose he rode home to warn his family and found the village smashed with no blood and no bodies, just a Titan with tiny limbs sprawled across his own roof. It spoke to him. It said welcome home. The truth surfaced later: Zeke's spinal fluid had turned the entire village, and the Titan on the house was Conny's mother.
He carried that for the rest of the war as the squad's plainest grief, the one loss that was technically still alive. When Falco fell into Paradis hands holding the Jaw Titan, Conny kidnapped the boy and took him to Ragako to feed him to his mother and turn her human again. Armin stopped him by nearly climbing into her mouth himself, and Conny, catching himself an inch from murdering a child, admitted his mother would not have wanted the trade. He decided the way to be a soldier she could be proud of was to go save people instead.
He did the dirtiest work of the port battle, shooting Daz and Samuel, friends from his cadet days, to keep the flying boat intact, and he flew into the final battle knowing what it cost. The centipede's mist made him one of the Titans he had spent his life killing, and Ymir's release gave him his body back. Three years on, he was on the ship to Paradis with the other ambassadors.
