TITAN POWERS EXPLAINED
How Titans work in Attack on Titan: the Nine Titans, Paths, and the Founding Titan.
The Nine Titans
After Ymir Fritz died, her power split into nine Titan shifters. Each has unique abilities:
Founding Titan: Can control all Titans and alter Eldian memories/bodies. Requires royal blood to activate. Attack Titan: Can see future inheritors\' memories. Always fights for freedom. Colossal Titan: 60 meters tall, explosive transformation, immense heat. Armored Titan: Full body hardened armor. Female Titan: Can mimic other Titan abilities, hardening, attracts Titans with screams. Beast Titan: Animal features (varies per user), can throw objects with devastating precision. Jaw Titan: Fastest, hardest jaws and claws. Cart Titan: Highest endurance, can maintain form for months. War Hammer Titan: Creates weapons and structures from hardened Titan flesh.
How Titan Shifting Works
To transform, a shifter must injure themselves (usually by biting their hand) while having a clear purpose in mind. Without resolve, the transformation fails.
Shifters can only maintain their form for a limited time before exhaustion. They heal injuries rapidly while in human form, and regenerate within their Titan.
The Curse of Ymir: All Titan shifters die exactly 13 years after inheriting their power, matching Ymir Fritz\'s original 13 years of life with the power.
Paths and the Coordinate
Paths are an invisible dimension connecting all Subjects of Ymir (Eldians). Through Paths, memories, wills, and even physical matter can be transmitted between Eldians across time and space.
The Coordinate is where all Paths converge, controlled by the Founding Titan. Here, Ymir Fritz endlessly builds Titans from sand. Whoever controls the Coordinate controls all Eldians.
Pure Titans vs Shifters
Pure Titans are mindless giants created when an Eldian is injected with Titan spinal fluid. They wander and eat humans on instinct, seeking to consume a Titan shifter (which would return them to human form).
Shifters are Eldians who consumed a previous shifter. They retain intelligence, can transform at will, and have unique abilities.
The Founding Titan\'s Vow
King Karl Fritz, the first Founding Titan holder on Paradis, made a vow renouncing war. This vow bound all royal-blooded holders: they could access the Founder\'s full power but were mentally overridden to refuse using it.
This is why Eren needed Zeke (royal blood) to bypass the vow. And why Eren, as a non-royal holder, couldn\'t activate the Founding Titan without touching someone of royal blood.
The Rumbling
The Walls surrounding Paradis Island are made of millions of Colossal Titans, placed there by King Fritz as a deterrent. The Rumbling is the act of unleashing them.
Eren activated the full Rumbling by touching Zeke in the Paths, convincing Ymir Fritz to lend him her power. The Wall Titans marched across the world, destroying approximately 80% of all life outside Paradis before the Alliance stopped Eren.
